Harrogate’s houses
Much of central Harrogate was built in the Victorian and Edwardian spa years: stone villas and terraces around the Stray, the Duchy estate and the streets off Valley Gardens. These are substantial, solid-walled buildings with high ceilings, original cornicing and timber floors, and many have been altered and extended several times.
Electrically, that history shows. It is common to find several generations of wiring in one house: a rewire from decades ago, later extensions on separate boards, and lighting that has been added room by room. A careful survey and an EICR give you a clear picture before committing to a rewire or a consumer unit upgrade.
When we work in these houses, the priorities are routing cables without damaging plasterwork and joinery, placing accessories where they suit the room’s proportions, and lighting high ceilings properly. Our guide to planning lighting during a renovation covers the decisions to make early.
Newer homes and developments
Harrogate has also grown outwards, with newer estates around Killinghall, Pannal and Jennyfields. Here the work is more often extensions, kitchen and garden rooms, outdoor power and lighting, EV preparation, and upgrades to meet how families use the house now.
